Since its establishment in 2003, NKDB has interviewed over 20,000 North Korean escapees to build the world’s largest repository of human rights abuses committed in North Korea and affecting the North Korean people. Its database has 143,769 entries on cases of North Korean human rights abuses and persons involved in these cases, according to the 2024 White Paper on North Korean Human Rights. Based on its extensive database, NKDB raises global awareness and conducts advocacy with various stakeholders, including the United Nations bodies, domestic and foreign government entities, international press, and INGOs.
While grounding our work in research and documentation, we have extended our efforts to provide trauma-informed care and redress to victims and honor their experiences through memorialization. We hope to restore the dignity of victims and elevate the human rights situation in North Korea by taking this holistic approach to justice and accountability.
Our work will continue until the day that North Koreans experience true restoration of their freedom and dignity.
