The Echo Never Stops Part 2

July 17, 2025 -

“Forgotten Names.” The first written source analyzed and documented by NKDB after the establishment of the Unified Human Rights Database in 2003. (An account of North Korean human rights abuses published by the Headquarters for the Democratization of North Korea in 2004.) The title also resonates with the mission of NKDB, which seeks to bring together the scattered and unheard voices of the victims of North Korean human rights abuses. Since 2003, NKDB has collected the stories of more than 45,000 victims.

Journey Toward a North Korean Human Rights Museum

The NKDB North Korean Human Rights Exhibition Hall is the only permanent exhibition space in South Korea and abroad dedicated to North Korean human rights. Since its establishment in 2003, NKDB has documented violations in North Korea, building the world’s largest repository of records on these abuses while amplifying the voices of victims to the international community. Through this work, NKDB has come to recognize that remembering the past and present, pursuing truth-telling initiatives, providing redress for victims, and restoring their dignity are essential steps toward improving human rights in North Korea. In 2018, NKDB established the Committee for the Establishment of a North Korean Human Rights Museum to further these goals.

Since its founding in 2003, the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (NKDB) has worked to document and amplify the voices of victims of North Korean human rights abuses. The current North Korean Human Rights Exhibition Hall represents the first step in this effort. We are now conducting a petition to gather public support for the future establishment of a permanent museum.
