Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a simple concept encouraging people to do good following the American Thanksgiving weekend. Following consumer holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is a day dedicated to global generosity, supporting charities and causes to do good around the world.
Here at NKDB, the foundation of our work, namely, the publishing of our data on North Korean human rights violations through our annual publications like the White Paper on North Korean Human Rights and the Social and Economic Integration of North Korean Defectors in South Korea is supported purely through donations from the public. We believe that the annual publication of this data is critical for bringing attention to the human rights issues facing those inside North Korea and North Koreans outside the country, and NKDB’s research has been cited by governments and organizations around the world.
In addition to our documentation work, your donations enable to provide much needed support to the numerous returned prisoners of war and abductees, victims of torture and human trafficking, and other unprotected North Korean defectors who require assistance as they settle into South Korean society.
To date, NKDB has relied on donations to record nearly 80,000 cases of human rights violations and data on over 50,000 people involved in those cases. This Giving Tuesday, we are asking for your help to continue to record the voices of the North Korean people! No matter how little, with your support, NKDB can continue to carry out our work of data collection, resettlement assistance for North Korean defectors, and educational programs advocating improved human rights for the North Korean people!
