On October 31st, NKDB held its 44th Monthly Briefing and Discussion on North Korean Human Rights on the topic of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which is an international treaty adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly and ratified by 189 states.

North Korea acceded to the CEDAW in 2001 but made three reservations regarding international treaty when it became a state party. While the DPRK withdrew two of these reservations (Article 2 and 9) in 2015, they failed to submit their state report for their second, third and fourth cycle. In 2016, the DPRK finally submitted their state report to the CEDAW committee. In light of this, NKDB also submitted a report, based on our in-depth research and interviews, to the CEDAW Committee. Alongside this one of NKDB’s researchers will be giving an oral submission at the 68th Session that will be held in November 8th, 2017 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Participants of the briefing included representatives from embassies and delegations in Seoul, including those from the United States, Norway, Switzerland, State of Kuwait, Finland, and Australia. Representations from international organizations, including NDI and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Korea, were also in attendance. We appreciate your participation and please revisit us for future briefings.
