On July 24, 2026, the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (NKDB) and the French Embassy held a Scholarship Award Ceremony for North Korean escapee families. Since 2021, the French Embassy has supported the children of North Korean escapee families and helped them fulfill their dreams through the scholarship program. NKDB selected a total of 10 students from families it has connected with through the Resettlement Assistance Headquarters to receive the French Embassy’s scholarship.

The event opened with congratulatory remarks from Bertrand Jadot, Deputy Head of Mission at the French Embassy, and Jong-hoon Park, NKDB Chairman. Mr. Jadot emphasized that human rights have played a central role in France’s history and foreign policy, and congratulated the scholars while expressing his hopes to continue working with NKDB in the future. Chairman Park extended his gratitude to the French Embassy for its lasting partnership, which goes beyond one-time support to provide companionship to these families as they build their futures. Marie-Line Seferian, Political Counselor at the French Embassy emphasised how the French Embassy put human rights and dignity at the forefront of the work which has led to the development of this scholarship program.

To be honest, after I entered middle school, there were many times when I didn’t want to study or I got distracted as studying for exams got harder and I had so much fun hanging out with friends. But with the scholarship that I was given today, I hope to read more books and study even harder. To everyone who believed in me and supported me like this––I am going to become a middle schooler I can be proud of, who tries her best in school and gets along with friends. Someday when I’m all grown up, I am going to be somebody kind and strong enough to pass on the same warmth I received today to younger kids and friends. Thank you again for gifting me this unforgettable happiness. I promise to do my best!
