On June 29th, NKDB held its 58th Monthly Briefing and Discussion on North Korean Human Rights at the NKDB Education Center for Korean Integration. This month, the Working Group for Human Rights and SDGs in North Korea were invited to present a civil society organization (CSO) Spotlight Report titled “A Human Rights-based Approach to the SDGs in the DPRK: Focusing on vulnerable groups and calling for collective efforts in times of COVID-19.”

A coalition of five Seoul-based CSOs and one academic research institute, with the support of National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), crafted the report to ensure progress towards implementing SDGs in the DPRK.

The first section of the report, presented by the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (NKDB), provided an overview of the DPRK’s overall progress on implementing the 17 SDGs amid the pandemic.

The next section of the report outlined the specific human rights violations faced by persons with disabilities, women, and children, presented by Handong International Law Centre (HILC), People for Successful Corean Reunification (PSCORE), and Citizens’ Alliance for North Korean Human Rights (NKHR).

The final section, presented jointly by Open North Korea (ONK) and Unification Academy (UA), identified the causes of exploitation and corruption in the DPRK and suggests ways to serve as barriers to achieving the SDGs.

To have a closer look at each section, please check out the upcoming webinar organized by the Working Group for Human Rights and SDGs in North Korea that will be  held on July 9th, 2021 (Friday) from 9:00-10:30 EDT (22:00-23:30 KST).
