On July 25th, NKDB held its 42nd Monthly Briefing and Discussion on North Korean Human Rights where a presentation was given on the general perception of human rights in the DPRK from both the perspective of the government and of the everyday people. North Korea’s notion of human rights is fundamentally different than that of many Western countries, as the DPRK puts a much stronger emphasis on the rights of the collective society rather than on the rights of the individual person. The discussion session included topics such as where and how North Korean defectors first learn of human rights, and the relationship between the flow of outside information into North Korea and its impact on human rights awareness.
Participants of the briefing included representatives from embassies and delegations in Seoul including the EU, Kuwait, Italy, Singapore, Norway, Australia, France, the US, Switzerland and Finland, as well as from international organizations including the UNHCR and NDI,.
