On September 2, 2025, NKDB hosted a seminar at the Seoul Press Center titled “In the Absence of Space, Memory Weakens – The Need for a North Korean Human Rights Museum.” The event gathered speakers from government, civil society, and the arts to discuss the urgent need for a permanent museum dedicated to North Korean human rights.

NKDB Executive Director Hanna Song highlighted the importance of systematically preserving the testimonies and records of victims, noting that “the testimonies and records of North Korean human rights victims are at great risk of being lost over time” and that “systematically preserving these materials goes beyond mere exhibition purposes; they can serve as a foundation for future transitional justice and international accountability.”

Other speakers, including Ms. Min Kyeong Choi of the NK Imprisonment Victims’ Family Association and Dr. Suk Soo Park of the Korean Cultural Space Architecture Association, stressed the importance of remembrance, education, and thoughtful design in creating a space that amplifies victims’ voices and engages the international community. The seminar concluded with legal and civil society leaders calling on South Korea’s public to play a leading role in raising awareness.

Through this seminar, NKDB reaffirmed its commitment to establishing the first North Korean Human Rights Museum as a space of remembrance and advocacy for future generations. We extend our sincere thanks to all speakers and participants for contributing to this important dialogue.
