NKDB's executive director Hanna Song was invited to co-write a policy brief with Dr. Peter Ward at the Sejong Institute. The brief was presented at the 9th Sejong Institute Policy Forum and addresses way to engage with North Korean human rights issues as well as the challenges and opportunities of the UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
Moderated by Dr. Seong Chang Chung, the forum delved into North Korea's paradoxical stance as a severe human rights violator and yet being a signatory to five international human rights treaties. The discussions highlighted the UPR's strengths and flaws and explored strategies for improving human rights in the DPRK ahead of the fourth UPR which will take place in November, 2024.
