On March 20, NKDB held its 47th Monthly Briefing and Discussion on North Korean Human Rights. This month’s Briefing was an overview of a report conducted by NKDB’s Human Rights in the North Korean Military Watch (a research function within the organization) on the human rights conditions of North Korean soldiers. NKDB researchers delivered the presentation and held a Q&A session on different types of violations and the human rights conditions in the Korean People’s Army. They spoke about the different abuses to the right of life and dignity which soldiers must endure due to management mishaps within the government, such as malnourishment and torture, and other systematic violations like public executions and sexual abuse.

Participants of the Briefing comprised representatives from embassies and delegations in Seoul, including those from the embassies of the Republic of Austria, Colombia, the United States, Australia, Singapore, and Switzerland. Representations from international organizations and institutions such as the Asia Foundation, National Democratic Institute, Liberty in North Korea, and from media outlets such as DailyNK, the Washington Post, and Stars and Stripes also attended our monthly event. We thank you all for coming and encourage you to join us again in our future briefings!
