On April 26, NKDB had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Ro Jai Bong for our 48th Monthly Briefing. Mr. Ro Jai Bong is the 22nd Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea (1991) and former Chief Presidential Secretary to President Roh Tae Woo. He served as a prime minister when the two Koreas joined the United Nations and supported the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry on human rights in the DPRK. During the briefing, he spoke about the prospects for North Korean human rights in view of the upcoming high-level meetings between the DPRK, ROK, and the US. Mr. Ro focused on his view about the perception of human rights of the North Korean regime, potential positive and negative outcomes of the summits, as well as possible approaches to remedying the human rights situation in the DPRK. Mr. Ro was joined by Kim Young Ho, the former ROK Ambassador on North Korean Human Rights.
The participants of the Briefing comprised of representatives from embassies and delegations in Seoul, including those from the embassies of the Hungary, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, Germany, and Finland. Representations from international organizations and academic institutions such as Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and SNU’s Graduate School of International Studies, and from media outlets such as the Spanish newspaper ABC.
