On November 28, NKDB had the pleasure of hosting Mr. David Straub, the current inaugural Sejong-LS Fellow at The Sejong Institute, for our 45th Monthly Briefing. As a Senior Foreign Service Office for over 30 years specializing in Korea and Japan, a lecturer at Johns Hopkins SAIS and SNU, and more, Straub has a distinguished career focused on the Korean Peninsula.
At NKDB’s Briefing, Straub gave a lecture on "The Strategic Context of the North Korean Human Rights Problem" and covered topics such as the U.S.’s historical perspective on North Korea’s human rights issues, as well as the growing interest of the international community and its implications on the Korean Peninsula. His talk gave way to a dynamic discussion on current events regarding the North Korea-South Korea-U.S. relationship, and how that relationship could affect the rest of the world. The group also spoke at length about the effects that the policies and direction of the current Administration in the U.S could have on the North Korean regime. We would like to thank both the participants and our Speaker for such a thought-provoking and engaging discussion on this critical topic!
Participants of the Briefing included representatives from embassies and delegations in Seoul, including those from Australia, Canada, Finland, Hungary, Norway, and the U.S. Additionally, representatives from UNHCR, Reuters, Stars & Stripes, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, Hankuk University, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, and the Asahi Shumbun Tokyo were in attendance. Thank you to all those who took part in our Briefing! NKDB would like to extend a special thanks to the French Institute for allowing us to use their beautiful conference space.
Our next Briefing will be in January 2018! Happy Holidays!
