NDKB looking back at 2016 through the four seasons…

~SPRING~
In the spring, NKDB had a chance to go to the Human Rights Council in Geneva where it held a panel discussion on the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council’s 31st session, along with seven other organizations, to present on the severe conditions of labor rights in North Korea. NKDB also took the opportunity to spread awareness on the conditions of North Korean political prisons, and prison facilities by releasing a catalogue of political prison camps “North Korean Political Prison Camps: A Catalogue of Political Prison Camp Staff, Detainees, and Victims of Enforced Disappearance” in Korean.

~SUMMER~
In the intense summer heat, NKDB took part in the Unification Expo to inform the general public about the human rights violations in North Korea. For all of our hard work, we were rewarded with a Prize for Hope and Enthusiasm by the Ministry of Unification. NKDB had the opportunity to go abroad once more and held seminars in Poland, Germany and the UK on the topic of North Korean overseas workers.

~FALL~
In September NKDB had the honor of welcoming Mr. Jai-Chun Lee, former ROK Ambassador to Russia, as he became the new Chairman of the Board. NKDB held a special anniversary event for the release of the 10th White Paper on North Korean Human Rights, celebrating 10 years since the creation of the database, as well as looking forward to the upcoming 10 years.

~WINTER~
In just December alone, NKDB held four domestic seminars. On Dec. 1, NKDB presented its research on the use of narcotic drugs in North Korea for which we hope to raise more international awareness. To finish this intense year, NKDB held seminars on North Korean overseas workers in Russia (Dec. 12), on Transitional Justice (Dec. 15) and on South Koreans’ perception of North Korean human rights (Dec. 29).

Thank you for all the support we received over 2016. Please join us to make 2017 a landmark year in North Korean human rights.
