What diplomatic strategies should the South Korean government have toward Japan for the unification of Korea?

Yesterday, Kak-soo Shin, former South Korean ambassador to Japan, gave a lecture titled “The unification of the Korean Peninsula and the role of Japan.”

In the lecture, Mr. Shin spoke not only about the significance of the South Korea-Japan relations for the unification of Korea, but also about principal agents and methods of the unification of Korea as well as prospects of the East Asian region based on the rise of China and the policies of the U.S. He emphasized that a new multi-national cooperative order(Pax Consortis) should be established in order to ensure the stability in the rapidly changing East Asian region.

As far as the South Korea-Japan relations are concerned, Mr. Shin explained that we should recognize Japan’s position in the international community. He added that we should pressure Japan, not through emotional responses, but via standards that are objective and universal to deal with Japan’s crimes committed during the Japanese occupation. Moreover, as the only two Asian member states of OECD, South Korea and Japan can grow together as partners to strengthen values such as freedom, democracy and market economy in the East Asian region. He spoke that cooperation and support from Japan is imperative to prepare the unification of Korea and to cope with issues after the unification.

Next Monday(October 24), Jai Chun Lee, chairman of NKDB and former South Korean ambassador to Russia, will deliver a lecture titled “Shedding New Light on the South Korea-Russia Relations for Unification Diplomacy.”
