What position should the South Korean government take on unification diplomacy towards China which is geographically our closest neighbour state and is rapidly emerging as a powerful state?

Gyu Hyeong Lee, former South Korean ambassador to China, gave a lecture on "the role of China and its tasks for unification diplomacy" on October 10. Mr. Lee stated that China has been maintaining its relationship with North Korea following the principal of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and that this is China's response to the U.S.' "Pivot to Asia" policy as it tries to ensure the stability of North Korea due to its strategical value in preventing impacts coming from the U.S. Nonetheless, Mr. Lee added that China supports 'peaceful unification of the two Koreas' without clearly mentioning how it should be realized. As his closing remarks, Mr. Lee emphasized that the South Korean government should consistently persuade China by ensuring that unification the Korean Peninsula would not hurt China's interests.

Next Monday(October 17), Kak-soo Shin, former South Korean ambassador to Japan, will give a lecture titled "the Unification of Korea and the Role of Japan."
