[NK News] What can still be done about widespread human rights abuses in North Korea

On March 14, 2024, NK News reported on the urgent need for international pressure, diplomacy, and engagement with North Korean defectors in addressing North Korea’s systemic human rights violations. Achieving meaningful change remains elusive due to geopolitical factors and the North Korean regime's lack of cooperation. Upon the COVID-19 pandemic, the human rights situation in North Korea has gotten more difficult to assess for experts, while there exists a strong demand for information in raising global awareness. Hanna Song, Executive Director at the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (NKDB), emphasized the need for a “true victim-centered approach.” That might require more efforts in non-judicial measures of accountability, such as “memorialization, compensation, and rehabilitation through psycho-social support.
