[NK News] South Korean officials avoid jail for forced repatriation of DPRK fishermen

On February 19, 2025, NK News reported that a Seoul court handed suspended sentences to four former officials responsible for the 2019 forced repatriation of two North Korean fishermen, a case that has raised serious human rights concerns.

Images from the case show the two fishermen physically resisting their deportation at the inter-Korean border, fearing torture or execution upon their return to North Korea. Despite this, South Korean authorities repatriated them within just five days, marking a rare and alarming case of forced repatriation.

Jian Lee, Human rights analyst at NKDB, attended the hearings and highlighted the historical significance of the ruling:

"This is the first case in which the location of the human rights violation was South Korea, and the perpetrators were the South Korean government."
