On October 7, 2024, NK News published new high resolution satellite imagery that reveals North Korea’s expansion and renovation of Kwalliso No. 16, the country’s largest known political prison camp. The findings highlight the regime’s ongoing efforts to maintain and expand these detention facilities, despite officially refuting their existence.
Hanna Song, Executive Director of the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (NDKB), described the kwalliso system as the most extreme form of detention in North Korea. This explains why testimonies of life inside the camps are particularly rare. To her :
“We are not aware of any testimonies from individuals who have experienced kwalliso post-2010”.
Despite North Korea’s denial of the existence of such camps, NKDB continues its vital work documenting human rights abuses and advocating for accountability.
