[NK News] 76 North Korean escapees arrive in South Korea in third quarter

On October 22, 2024, NK News reported that 76 North Korean escapees successfully arrived in South Korea during the third quarter of the year.

Unique Kim, a human rights analyst at the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights, explained that most of these defectors were “women who left North Korea before the pandemic and lived in China for several years”, even though “one escapee, however, managed to leave North Korea during the pandemic”.

She also highlighted the probability that defector numbers remain low due to fewer people leaving the DPRK. Increased state surveillance in China may, however, drive more North Korean escapees residing there to seek resettlement in South Korea..
