On February 14, 2025, NK News reported that the U.S. Treasury Department has frozen funds for the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), called by Elon Musk an “evil organization” that “needs to be dissolved”.
This decision threatens the survival of many NGOs working on North Korean Human Rights which have relied on NED grants to sustain critical research and advocacy.
Hanna Song, Executive Director at NKDB, expressed serious concerns about the long-term consequences:
“In the short term, I think a lot of small organizations will have to stop their operations. And that creates a long-term issue. For years, we’ve been trying to get more escapees to be at the forefront of the movement, to invest in a younger generation. That takes a lot of investment, and NED was really good at doing that”.
