[NK News]: North Korea has expanded notorious political prison in northeast, imagery shows

On October 7, 2024, NK News published new high resolution satellite imagery that reveals North Koreaโ€™s expansion and renovation of Kwalliso No. 16, the countryโ€™s largest known political prison camp. The findings highlight the regimeโ€™s ongoing efforts to maintain and expand these detention facilities, despite officially refuting their existence.ย 

Hanna Song, Executive Director of the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (NDKB), described the kwalliso system as the most extreme form of detention in North Korea. This explains why testimonies of life inside the camps are particularly rare. To her :ย 

ย โ€œWe are not aware of any testimonies from individuals who have experienced kwalliso post-2010โ€.ย 

Despite North Koreaโ€™s denial of the existence of such camps, NKDB continues its vital work documenting human rights abuses and advocating for accountability.
