[BBC] North Korean Defector to Sue Kim Jong Un for Abuse

On July 10, 2025, BBC reported on new lawsuits filed by NKDB against Kim Jong-Un. The plaintiff, a North Korean defector, is seeking criminal prosecution against members of the North Korean regime and civil damages for alleged instances of torture and sexual abuse. 

Hanna Song, the executive director of NKDB, told BBC that the significance of these lawsuits is that both criminal and civil charges are being pursued. Ms. Song also noted the importance of allowing the plaintiff’s voice to be heard and recorded in the court of law:

What we've come to understand through years of work on accountability is that what victims really seek isn't just financial compensation - it's acknowledgment. Receiving a court ruling in their favour carries enormous meaning. It tells them their story doesn't just end with them - it's acknowledged by the state and officially recorded in history.
