[NK News] Joe Biden calls out state torture in North Korea, citing political prison camps

28 Jun 2023

On June 27th, 2023, NK News covered the condemnation of North Korea by U.S. President Joe Biden in a statement issued on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Hanna Song, Director of International Cooperation at NKDB, appeared in the article, voicing concern over the fate of North Korean escapees currently detained in China as they would face torture and other inhumane punishment once they are repatriated to North Korea.

Biden’s remarks come as experts increasingly express concerns about the fate of North Korean defectors currently held in detention centers in China, awaiting their forced repatriation to the DPRK.

Hanna Song of the Seoul-based Database Center for North Korean Human Rights recently told NK Pro that defectors detained in China face “arbitrary detention, torture, forced labor and even execution” if repatriated to the DPRK.

Song added that such punishments are “well-documented and based on countless testimonies of those who have managed to escape the oppressive regime.”
