On March 31, 2022, data produced by NKDB was cited in an article by NK News regarding how the COVID-19 pandemic has made it more difficult for North Korean escapees to stay in touch with their families still living in North Korea.
"A poll of over 400 defectors in South Korea by the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights showed in Dec. 2021 that remittances dropped about a quarter in 2021 compared to 2019. The survey found that a major reason was the increasing difficulty of communicating with family in the North."
