[NK News] European Council renews human rights sanctions on top North Korean officials

On December 6, 2022 NK News reported on the European Council's renewed human rights sanctions.

The European Council (EC) renewed sanctions against two high-ranking North Korean officials and the country’s prosecutors office for their alleged complicity in human rights abuses, the body announced Monday.

Hanna Song, a director at the Seoul-based NGO Database Center for North Korean Human Rights, said that while the EU sanctions are unlikely to translate into immediate improvements in the DPRK they nonetheless send an “important message” to Kim Jong Un.

Song also said the EU and other states with similar sanctions should work with NGOs to develop a more robust list of 

human rights violators — “not just the ones at the top.” 

“Designating those who are more mid-ranking sends a strong message to the DPRK, that the EU is serious about preventing further human rights violations from occurring and that it will keep it on its agenda,” Song said.
